In the 1840s, Edo (today's Tokyo) had become one of the largest cities in the world. The great master of the ukiyo-e, Utagawa Kuniyoshi, produced a painting that beautifully illustrates the idea that every human is connected inside networks that produce a version of humanness. When describing the painting, Kuniyoshi noted, "Despite his fierce look, he is really a nice person." Illustrating the interdependence that these networks create, he continued, "And a nice person could only exist if they get along and coexist with other peosons peacefully."
